...and the Band played On
(1993 Roger Spottiswoode)

From Randy Shilts' bestseller comes a powerful, enlightening and moving chronicle of our times.

In the summer of 1981, few knew of the deadly disease we now call AIDS. "...and The Band Played On" follows the struggle of a handful of strong-willed men and women who took on the fight to save lives.

Matthew Modine stars as Dr. Don Francis, a researcher at the Centers for Disease Control who seeks to uncover the cause of a number of mysterious deaths. With little funding for a subject few will even discuss, not only must he fight the disease, but a disinterested public, the government, the media and even the communities where the mysterious virus strikes hardest. But as the death toll mounts, public interest is stirred and Francis' research becomes a desperate race against time.

About a Boy
(2002 Chris & Paul Weitz)

svensk titel: Om en Pojke

Hugh Grant stars as Will Freeman, a proudly self-absorbed 38-year-old Londoner. Living lavishly off the royalties from a hit Christmas song penned by his father, Will excels at nothing except doing nothing, which, in his case, includes shopping for CDs and having his hair "professionally disheveled."

When Will makes a guilt-free exit from a brief fling with a single mom, he decides to crash a meeting of S.P.A.T. (Single Parents, Alone Together) in pursuit of more single mothers. This scheme leads to meeting Suzie (Victoria Smurfit) and Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), the socially awkward 12-year-old son of her flaky best friend, Fiona (Toni Collette). A series of odd situations leads to Will and Marcus becoming unlikely friends, and gradually both of their lives start to change for the better.

However, when Will falls for the lovely Rachel (Rachel Weisz) and attempts to pass Marcus off as his son, things go awry. In order to win the heart of Rachel and make amends with Marcus, Will must finally grow up--and completely embarrass himself in front of hundreds of people.

Another Woman
(1988 Woody Allen)

svensk titel: En Annan Kvinna

University professor Marion Post is experiencing a type of midlife crisis, so she rents an apartment in order to write a book. The apartment is next to a psychiatrist's office, and she inadvertently hears what transpires between the doctor and some of her patients. She becomes obsessed with the life and ongoing therapy of one woman in particular who believes that her marriage is ending. Through this patient, Marion begins to think about issues in her own life and the causes of her own unhappiness. Woody Allen's intense psychodrama, based somewhat on Ingmar Bergman's psychoanalytic masterpiece Wild Strawberries, features fabulous performances from Gena Rowlands and Gene Hackman, as well as terrific minor turns by Blythe Danner, John Houseman, and Martha Plympton.

Another Woman
(1988 Woody Allen)

Middle-aged philosophy professor Marion Post (Gena Rowlands) would appear to have every advantage. After all, she has a rock-solid professional reputation, an equally secure marriage and enough spare cash to be able to rent a separate flat in which to write her latest book without interruption. But she is interrupted, thanks to an accident of ventilation, by the therapy sessions going on in the psychiatrist's office next door. Voyeuristically fascinated, Marion is particularly struck by the way that the unhappy experiences of his patient Hope (Mia Farrow) mirror her own, and realises that her life is nowhere near as materially and emotionally secure as she's been pretending. And when she decides to rely less on her beloved logic and reason and open herself up to dreams, imagination and passion, the scene is set for a life-changing transformation.

Apocalypse Now (Complete Dossier)
I love the smell of a collector's edition in the morning. Everyone's favorite Joseph Conrad adaptation gets the fancy packaging and extras treatment with this release of Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier. Both the original theatrical cut and the 2001 Redux version are included, with enough extras to keep one occupied on a long boat trip. Calling this the "complete" dossier is sure to raise hackles among fans who insist that Eleanor Coppola's lauded documentary, Hearts of Darkness, which chronicled husband Francis's harrowing experience making the film, should have been included. (As of this review, Hearts of Darkness has yet to be released on DVD, so battered VHS copies will have to suffice.) Packaged in a cardboard "dossier" sleeve, the two-disc set includes Marlon Brando reading T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men," new production featurettes, and cast member interviews. Owners of previous editions of either of the cuts might consider how much they want all the officially sanctioned information on this edition. For newcomers to the Vietnam epic, this is an edition worth going crazy for.

Apocalypse Now (Redux)
(2001 Francis Ford Coppola)

Twenty-two years after Apocalypse Now had its first premier, Coppola returned to the material, and created Apocalypse Now Redux, an expanded and re-edited version of the film that adds 53 minutes of footage excised from the film's original release. In addition to adding a number of smaller moments that even out the film's rhythms, Coppola restores two much-discussed sequences that he chose not to include in his original edition of the film — an encounter in the jungle between Willard, his crewmates and a trio of stranded Playboy models on a U.S.O. tour, as well as a stopover at a plantation operated by French colonists De Marais and Roxanne. Packaged in a cardboard "dossier" sleeve, the two-disc set includes Marlon Brando reading T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men," new production featurettes, and cast member interviews. Owners of previous editions of either of the cuts might consider how much they want all the officially sanctioned information on this edition. For newcomers to the Vietnam epic, this is an edition worth going crazy for.

Atlantis
(1991 Luc Besson)

Atlantis is director Luc Besson's awe-inspiring celebration of the beauty of the world beneath the sea, expanding upon the themes touched on in his huge hit The Big Blue. Combining stunning underwater cinematography and a hypnotic score by Eric Serra, Besson's singular vision defies dialogue or narrative structure to explore ocean life as you've never seen it before. At once thrilling, lyrical, and mysterious, Atlantis' spellbinding images - with its graceful visuals of manta rays, whales, dolphins, sea snakes and even ferocious sharks at play - will haunt your memory long after the film ends.
