Terms of Endearment
(1983 James L Brooks)

svensk titel: Ömhetsbevis

Three decades in the lives of widow Aurora Greenway and her daughter Emma. Fiercely protected by Aurora throughout childhood, Emma runs into resistance from her mother when she marries wishy-washy college teacher Flap. Aurora is even more put out at the prospect of being a grandmother, though she grows a lot fonder of her three grandkids than she does of her son-in-law. Flap proves that Aurora's instincts were on target when he enters into an affair with a student. Meanwhile, Emma finds romantic consolation with an unhappily married banker. As for Aurora, she is ardently pursued by her next-door neighbor, boisterous astronaut Garrett Breedlove. After 75 minutes or so of pursuing an episodic, semi-comic plotline, the film abruptly shifts moods when Emma discovers that she has terminal cancer.

This is England
(2006 Shane Meadows)

Based on incidents from his own childhood, Shane Meadows's film is a stunning, brutal look at 1983 Britain, during the conservative Margaret Thatcher regime and the controversial Falklands War.

Twelve-year-old Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) is a tough little kid who is street-smart beyond his years despite being short for his age. He falls in with a group of older boys, led by Woody, who hang out at a local coffee shop, like to commit minor acts of anarchy, and adopt Shaun as one of their own--especially Smell, an overly made-up teenager who dresses like Boy George and develops a cute romantic interest in the complicated boy.

But when skinhead Combo gets out of jail, he returns to the gang, eager to take over the reins and lead them on a nationalistic battle to get rid of the immigrants who are stealing their jobs and to defend England to the death.

Tjuren från Bronx
(1980 Martin Scorsese)

originaltitel: Raging Bull

Considered by many critics to be the best film of the 1980s, this gritty docudrama about hardheaded prizefighter Jake La Motta is so astonishingly real it seems like the champ's black-and-white home-movie reels have been spliced together. Robert De Niro's Oscar-winning performance is intense and awe inspiring, and Martin Scorsese uses his regular bag of camera tricks to add to the proceedings. The film features a stellar supporting turn by Joe Pesci as La Motta's brother, Joey.
