Maïtresse
(1976 Barbet Schroeder)

Based on an encounter with a real life dominatrix, Schroeder’s controversial story of a Paris prostitute specializing in bondage and sado-masochism was refused a certificate on its original release. The film features graphic scenes of torture and fetishism which the BBFC in 1976 described as ‘miles in excess of anything we have ever passed in this field’.

Released at the time in a handful of club cinemas, in 1981 the film was cut by almost five minutes and finally awarded an X certificate. Maitresse is presented here uncut for the first time in the UK. Featuring a youthful Gerard Depardieu as the young innocent who falls for the mysterious maitresse, and Bulle Ogier as the leather clad dominatrix, the film is both a conventional love story and a dark study of fetishism. As the lovers’ relationship begins to mirror the power games of the bordello, they become unable to separate their ‘normal’ relationship form the perversions and masochism of the chamber below.

Metropolis
(1927 Fritz Lang)

Shortly after that 1927 release, an entire quarter of Lang's original version was cut by Paramount for the US release, and by Ufa in Germany, an act of butchery very much against the director's wishes.
The excised footage was believed lost, irretrievably so - that is, until one of the most remarkable finds in all of cinema history, as several dusty reels were discovered in a small museum in Buenos Aires. Argentina in 2008. Since then, an expert team of film archivists has been working at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Germany to painstakingly reconstruct and restore Lang's film.

Mighty Aphrodite
(1995 Woody Allen)

Released in 1995, "Mighty Aphrodite" was arguably Woody Allen's most successful film since Hannah and Her Sisters almost a decade earlier. The story follows Allen's neurotic New York sports writer Lenny, who becomes obsessed with tracking down his adopted son's birth mother, Linda. His odyssey is narrated and commented upon with coruscating wit by a Greek chorus led by F Murray Abraham. Despite their dire warnings at his rather ham-fisted attempts at hubris, there is nothing tragic in the ultimately uplifting tale. Lenny eventually locates Linda (an Oscar-winning performance from the enchanting Mira Sorvino) and discovers that she's caught up in just about every aspect of the sex trade. Without revealing his reasons, he sets about improving her life with hilarious results.
