30 Rock - Season Five
No doubt a lot of work goes into the daft, delirious comedy of "30 Rock", but it seems to spring fully formed from the brow of Tina Fey.

Over the course of season five, Liz Lemon (Fey), the eternally floundering head writer of sketch comedy show TGS, struggles to maintain her relationship with airplane pilot Carol (guest star Matt Damon); unflappable and domineering network executive Jack Donaghy (Baldwin) navigates life as a husband and father while fighting to maintain his status within the new hierarchy of Kabletown; erratic star Tracy Jordan (Morgan) lusts after awards while his wife gets a reality show (one entire episode is presented as an episode of Queen of Jordan); greedy, grasping Jenna (Krakowski) does her best to weasel her way into celebrity; and eternally cheerful page Kenneth (McBrayer) glides above all the chaos with a blissful smile.

30 Rock - Season One
"30 Rock" stars comedy geek goddess Tina Fey as Liz Lemmon, who juggles her hapless personal life with her chaotic career as the producer and head writer of an SNL-ish sketch comedy show. She has a new boss, cunning and ruthless GE executive Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), who insists on being her mentor, and a new star, medicated, loose-cannon comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), who steals the spotlight from the show's flighty star, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski).

Briskly paced and perfectly cast, "30 Rock" rewards viewers with brilliant dialogue (when Liz asks Jack why he is dressed in a tuxedo with no formal event to attend, he coolly responds, "It's after six; what am I, a farmer?") and fresh characters you haven't seen on a hundred other sitcoms.

Co-workers and friends, they are all trying to balance work and life, with the inevitable results...

House, M.D. - Season Five
"House" begins its fifth season on a somber note. With his girlfriend, Amber, dead, Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) finds his friendship with the cantankerous Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) to be more strained than ever and temporarily leaves the hospital where they work. He eventually returns, which is a good thing, because Wilson is the closest thing House has to a moral compass.

The writers of this drama do an admirable job of inserting elements of well-placed comedy into the often-intense vignettes. Otherwise, House wouldn't be such a likable character. In fact, without the humor, he can often be downright despicable, especially to those he supposedly likes the most. Viewers learn that his lack of bedside manner (in and out of the hospital) probably was passed down from his father (R. Lee Ermey, who makes a brief appearance).

House, M.D. - Season Four
How do you keep a medical show, entering its fourth series, fresh for another round of episodes? If you're House, it's easy: get rid of the main team, and have a new bunch come along and audition to be doctors. It's a very House thing to do, and it makes the first half of season four an absolute blast.

Much of the reason for that of course is Hugh Laurie, in the title role. As House, he manages to turn himself into the medical Simon Cowell, chucking out outrageously sarcastic asides, while also giving space to the intriguing collection of supporting players. It's a stunning performance. On top of that is the usual assortment of medical mysteries, including a brilliantly constructed remote diagnosis of a patient stuck in the South Pole.

They need a new member and Danny would rather have a pretty woman instead of street kid Billy Bond (Ashley Walters). Can the crew convince him otherwise? There are, as usual, plenty of nasty people deserving of a fleecing from the gang. This time around the targets include a porn king, a ruthless nursing home owner, and a charity crook. The crew also travel to LA, to sell the Hollywood sign to a Texan, and Las Vegas, where a mob boss needs his comeuppance. Danger, however, is just around the corner...

Hustle: The Con is On! - Season Three
The third series of the con drama Hustle finds the team in confident form. The premise remains pretty much unaltered, as a team of con artists plan and execute an increasingly elaborate and well-plotted collection of jobs. But the fun as always is in the execution, with a lively cast making the show hard to resist.

Season three features six episodes, with some real highlights to be found. As always, the series finale is just brilliant, leaving you salivating for the fourth season, but surely the episode finding Mickey and Danny naked in the midst of London will go down as one of the best that Hustle’s ever managed to rustle up.

Married with Children - Most Outrageous 2
Here are more select episodes from the grungy, middle-class existence of the Bundy family, centerpiece of Fox TV's early hit series Married with Children. Choice bits include "A Man's Castle," finding Al (Ed O'Neill) in a crisis of masculine confidence after wife Peg (Katey Sagal) redecorates his bathroom fortress-of-solitude with frilly trappings. "Who'll Stop the Rain" concerns Al's misguided (and cheap) effort to fix a roof leak, resulting in multiple, earthbound falls. "Raingirl" is a good showcase for sexy comic actress Christina Applegate, playing Bundy daughter Kelly as a television station intern-turned-weather bunny suddenly offered a $250,000 contract; the problem is that her manager is also her bungling father, Al. "If Al Had a Hammer" finds the Bundy patriarch building a private room with his heirloom hammer--until the secret gets out. Gross, outrageous, but often sharp about the heaven-hell dichotomy of family life.

South Park - Volume One
Four foul-mouthed tykes in parkas and wool caps navigate the treacherous snows of adolescence such as puppy love, sibling jealousy, and alien abduction in the cartoon that celebrates the American art of bad taste with crude, cut-out animation and construction-paper color.

The pilot episode, "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe," establishes the tone and style of all episodes to come: gentle homilies and childhood innocence arising from a twisted plot with grotesque and bizarre twists, in this case involving UFOs, flaming flatulence, and a 20-foot antenna array that springs out of Cartman's butt.

In "Volcano" the boys learn the masculine art of hunting endangered species and meet the mythic wilderness monster Scuzzlebutt while oozing lava threatens their town.

In "Weight Gain 4000," "big boned" Cartman decides he must slam dietary supplements to beef up for a TV appearance with Kathy Lee Gifford, while Mr. Garrison (egged on by insidious hand puppet Mr. Hat) plots his revenge.

Finally, Stan learns tolerance in "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride" while his elementary school struggles to beat the 72-point spread in the big homecoming game--a major event in a town where many citizens never got past the fifth grade. Sweater-garbed creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone introduce each episode in bizarre fireside chats in which they proclaim every episode their "very favorite" as they exchange longing, moon-eyed glances and their dog Old Scratch changes size and breed from shot to shot.

South Park - Volume Three
Volume 3 of South Park on DVD contains four episodes from 1997.

"Starvin' Marvin" (a Thanksgiving episode) features an attack on the townspeople by genetically altered turkeys while the boys adopt an Ethiopian boy accidentally sent to them via airmail.

"Mecha Streisand" was a chance for the program's creators to unleash their hatred of Barbra Streisand. Paying tribute to the Japanese monster duel movies of the 1960s, the story hilariously portrays Streisand as a rich, egomaniacal celebrity hell-bent on finding the missing relic that will transform her into a giant metal Barbra--a monster that crushes South Park's buildings at one moment while pausing to sign an autograph for Kyle's mother the next. Viewers will find some great musical performances in the

"Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo": Kyle's "I'm a Lonely Jew on Christmas" lament; Mr. Hankey's "Howdy-Ho"; Chef's original, yuletide song (as only Chef can do); Cartman's "Kyle's Mom Is a Bitch"; and the finale chorus of the "Mr. Hankey" theme. While the town works to put on a "nondenominational, non-offensive" school play, Kyle tries to convince family and friends that yes, indeed, the Christmas turd in a red Santa hat that sang and danced in his bathroom is real.

If "Mr. Hankey" is the South Park musical, then "Tom's Rhinoplasty" is the vomiting special. Teacher Mr. Garrison takes a leave of absence to have plastic surgery while the good looks of his substitute, Ms. Ellen, send the boys reeling into lovey-dovey land. As they compete to woo Ms. Ellen during Valentine's Day season, Wendy Testaburger's jealousy festers and grows into an explosively funny climax (due in part to the twists on Ms. Ellen's character).

South Park - Volume Two
Four more episodes from Comedy Central's animated sitcom South Park are included in the second volume of this series.

In "An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig," a crazy, raunchy look at genetic cloning (as well as a parody of Marlon Brando's embarrassing performance in The Island of Dr. Moreau), the boys try to win a science fair by mating Kyle's pet elephant with Cartman's pot-bellied pig.

"Death" addresses both euthanasia and, self-consciously, offensive television. As Stan's 102-year-old grandfather tries to get someone to off him, South Park parents try to get their kids' favorite TV show--starring the farting, swearing duo Terrence and Phillip--tossed off the air.

In "Pinkeye," the town finds itself in the midst of an epidemic of zombie-ism spawned by the mix of embalming fluid and Worcestershire sauce in the cadaver of the bundled, mumbling Kenny--who, for a change, dies at the beginning of the show.

"Damien" has the makings of a classic, both for its boxing match between Jesus (of the public access, call-in show Jesus and Pals) and the 350-pound red Beelzebub as well as for the twisted and excessive celebration of Cartman's birthday. Viewers will find some of the funniest Cartman lines here. He basks in the attention his birthday brings by assigning out gifts to party invitees and stuffing himself with pie, cake, and ice cream, all provided by the eerily pleasant Mrs. Cartman, of course.

South Park: The Passion of the Jew
All the years of Cartman taunting Kyle for being a Jew finally come to a head in this episode. As a result of seeing "The Passion", a traumatised Kyle has to admit that Cartman may have been right about his heritage all along. Inspired by Kyle's change of heart and a powerful love for Mel Gibson, Cartman incites many of the film's hardcore fans to band together and carry out its message. Meanwhile, Stan and Kenny also see the movie and embark upon a quest to find Mel Gibson and get their money back.

Bonus episodes:
Christian Rock Hard
When the other boys kick Cartman out of their band, he pulls his own group together to make music for Jesus. While Cartman's "Faith + 1" rockets to the top of the Christian charts, Stan, Kyle and Kenny are arrested for downloading music from the Internet.

Red Hot Catholic Love
When the Catholic Church sex scandal negatively impacts church attendance in South Park, Priest Maxi travels to Rome to confront religious leaders about a solution. After intensive counselling about the issue, the boys are still confused. Cartman distracts everyone when he pulls off what was believed to be scientifically impossible.

Star Gate SG-1 - Season Two
The central conceit of the original Stargate--the existence of an artificially created "wormhole" through which one can travel to different worlds light years away from Earth--was an intriguing one. In seizing on the obvious possibilities for expanding on that premise, series executive producers-writers Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright have smartly retained some of the film's basic elements (its amalgam of myth and theoretical hokum, or the ongoing clash of wills between scientists and soldiers), while adding a variety of fresh ideas (including new characters, new locations, and a welcome dose of humor, much of it supplied by Richard Dean Anderson, MacGyver himself, who replaces Kurt Russell in the central role of Colonel Jack O'Neill). The result is a show with multidimensional heroes and villains and consistently compelling story lines (many of them introduced in the pilot and carried forward through subsequent episodes) balancing excellent special effects and production values. All this and full frontal nudity, too (at least in the aforementioned pilot). Who can resist?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" focuses on the 24th century adventures of Captain Benjamin Sisko on space station Deep Space 9, an outpost situated near the mouth of a stable wormhole on the far reaches of explored space. Although Sisko commands Deep Space 9, the station actually belongs to the inhabitants of nearby Bajor, who requested Starfleet’s protective presence after Bajoran freedom fighters put an end to the brutal Cardassian occupation of their world.

Approximately a sixth of the station’s 300 permanent residents are Starfleet personnel; there is also a sizable Bajoran militia presence. The rest of Deep Space 9’s inhabitants are civilians, most of whom work in the station’s Promenade, a kind of indoor marketplace. Initially, Sisko’s mandate from Starfleet was to protect Bajor and the station from any hostiles who ventured into the area. But with the discovery of the nearby wormhole—a shortcut through space that leads directly to the uncharted Gamma quadrant—Sisko’s mandate has expanded exponentially, as the region becomes the gateway to all manner of visitors, both friendly and extremely hostile.

Star Trek: Voyager - Season Four
For many fans, "Voyager" hit its peak in the fourth season, due in no small part to a certain former Borg drone named Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 0-1, but you can call her Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Following the season 3 cliffhanger "Scorpion," the crew enters an unlikely alliance with the Borg against Species 8472, led by Seven of Nine, who ends up restoring (mostly) her human roots and trying to assimilate herself among Voyager's crew all the time feeling the pull of the Collective and resisting the mother-hen attempts of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). While Seven's curvaceous figure and skin-tight uniform certainly won over many fans, she was helped by a commanding presence, good writing ("So you wish to copulate?" was a classic line), and a stage that was cleared for her by the coinciding departure of one of the most prominent characters of the series.

Star Trek: Voyager - Season One
"Star Trek: Voyager" began life in 1995 with some truly fascinating prospects in its two-hour pilot episode.

Opening in the 24th century, a setting contemporary with that of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and carrying over story elements from each of those series, "Caretaker" finds Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) stepping into the middle of Federation troubles with the Maquis, an army of rebels violently resisting the interplanetary organization's treaty with the brutal Cardassians. In the process, both Voyager and the Maquis ship under surveillance are accidentally catapulted out of the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant (the familiar stomping grounds of Starfleet personnel) by a benign but dying being called the Caretaker. Voyager ends up in the unexplored Delta Quadrant, some 70,000 light years away.

Star Trek: Voyager - Season Six
In their sixth season trying to return to the Alpha Quadrant, the crew of Voyager continues to find signs that they may be close to home.

They ran across another Federation starship in the season 5 cliffhanger, "Equinox," which is concluded in action-packed fashion. Then they benefit from a brief communications link to home thanks to the ongoing efforts of "The Next Generation's" Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz), occasionally assisted by Counsellor Troi (Marina Sirtis). "One Small Step" sets Voyager on the trail of NASA's first manned mission to Mars (one of the bonus features details Robert Picardo's post-Trek work with NASA).

Star Trek: Voyager - Season Two
As Captain Janeway, Kate Mulgrew maintained Starfleet integrity in the lawless expanse of the Delta quadrant, and became the ethical conscience of her still-uneasy Maquis/Starfleet crew, whose unanimous loyalty would be dramatically proven in "The '37's" (a first-season hold-over).

Janeway's moral guidance would also assert itself in "Death Wish" (a "Q" episode featuring NextGen's Jonathan Frakes) and "Tuvix," in which life-or-death decisions landed squarely on her shoulders. Season 2 brought similar development to all the primary characters, deepening their relationships and defining their personalities, especially Robert Beltran as Chakotay, now firmly established as Janeway's best friend (and nearly more than that, in "Resolutions") and command-decision confidante.

Unlike most television crime dramas, which neatly introduce and then solve a case all in the space of one hour, "The Wire" follows one single drug and homicide investigation throughout the length of an entire season.

Centered on the drug culture of inner-city Baltimore, the series' storyline unfolds from the points of view of both the criminals lording the streets and the police officers determined to bring them down. This first season introduces detective Jimmy McNulty and his supervisor, Cedric Daniels, as they begin to pursue evidence against drug kingpin Avon Barksdale.

Without a Trace - Season One
It has not taken long for Without a Trace to emerge from the shadows of CSI and become a ratings force in its own right. Jerry Bruckheimer produced both series, and both feature the-face-is-familiar character actors with extensive and diverse resumes who have been catapulted to primetime stardom. Jack Malone, head of a crack FBI missing persons unit, is the Australian-born Anthony LaPaglia's breakout role after years of portraying enough Italian mobsters and criminals to populate a season of The Sopranos. LaPaglia was a surprise Golden Globe Award-winner for this inaugural season. Without a Trace is instantly arresting. "The clock is ticking" in each episode, as Malone and company race against time to find a missing person. "After 48 hours," Malone explains to the rookie member of the team in the series pilot, "they're gone." To solve each baffling case, Malone and fellow agents Samantha Spade (Poppy Montgomery), Vivian Johnson (Marianne Jean-Baptiste of Secrets and Lies), Danny Taylor (Enrique Murciano), and new guy Martin Fitzgerald (Eric Close), must work from the inside out. "Once we find out who she is," Malone says of one victim, "odds are we'll find out where she is."
