Barkleys of Broadway, The
(1949 Charles Walters)

svensk titel: Vi Dansar Igen!

Fred and Ginger say hello to Broadway - and goodbye to their glorious teaming. After 10 years apart, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers reteam in their final film pairing, cleverly written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and smoothly directed by Charles Walters.

The story, per many sources, mirrors real-life creative tensions the two shared. Astaire plays driven hoofer Josh Barkley. Rogers is his wife Dinah, who longs to forsake the clackety-clap-tapping of Bouncin' the Blues for stage dramas. She parts, Josh vies to win her back and the routines leading to a happy resolution include Fred's "Shoes with Wings On" and a rhapsodic reprise of a George and Ira Gershwin number from "Shall We Dance": "They Can't Take That Away from Me". All of which proves they can't take away the Astaire/Rogers magic either.

Before the Devil knows You're Dead
(2007 Sidney Lumet)

Sidney Lumet proves he hasn't lost any of his bite with this riveting suspense thriller that retains the director's classic approach to storytelling while updating it at the same time.

Danny Balint is a young Jewish man, living in the world's most cosmopolitan city. By night, he studies his religion's scriptures and teaches Hebrew, but by day an entirely different personality manifests itself.
Danny (Ryan Gosling) has become magnetised by a force which stands in direct contradiction to his heritage: Neo-Fascism. Based on real events, this surprising psychological saga from writer and director Henry Bean charts one man's descent into a world of violence. But this is not just the violence which explodes on the streets, or which comes from the extremist meetings at the home of the svengali-like cultist, Lina Moebius (Theresa Russell). This film is about the inner violence and struggle in the mind of a man who still cannot escape his true Jewish identity. Danny's battle to reconcile the two warring sides of his character leads to the very borders of sanity, and on the path of self-destruction...

Belles on their Toes
(1952 Henry Levin)

svensk titel: Härliga Tider

Myrna Loy charms as the Gilbreth family matriarch in this enjoyable 1952 sequel to Walter Lang's comedy Cheaper by the Dozen. Picking up from the somber ending of Cheaper, in which Frank Sr. (Clifton Webb) dies, leaving behind his wife, Lillian (Loy), and 12 children, Belles focuses on the family's slow recovery and aspirations for a future. Lillian's qualifications as an engineer are dismissed--sometimes humiliatingly--by sexist men, though she finally receives a training position with the plain-speaking Sam Harper (Edward Arnold) and the respect of a major university. Meanwhile, eldest daughter Ann (Jeanne Crain) is wooed by a young doctor (Jeffrey Hunter), and the other Gilbreth kids weed out unsuitable suitors for their dating-age sisters. Several pleasant musical numbers punctuate the comically unpredictable action, including a few by Hoagy Carmichael as the Gilbreth's wry cook.

Black White + Gray
(2007 James Crump)

Yale-educated and born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Sam Wagstaff's transformation from innovative museum curator to Robert Mapplethorpe's lover and patron is intensively probed in 'Black, White and Gray'.

During the heady years of the 1970's and 1980's, the New York City art scene was abuzz with a new spirit, and Mapplethorpe would be at the center of it. Wagstaff pulled him from his suburban Queens existence, gave him a camera and brought him into this art world that seemed to be waiting for him, creating the man whose infamous images instilled emotions ranging from awe to anger. In turn, Mapplethorpe brought the formerly starched-shirt preppie to the world of drugs and gay S-and-M sex, well documented in his still-startling photographs. Twenty-five years separated the lovers, but their relationship was symbiotic to its core, and the two remained together forever.

The film also explores the relationship both men had with musician/poet Patti Smith, whose 1975 debut album Horses catapulted her to fame.
