2001: A Space Odyssey
(1968 Stanley Kubrick)

svensk titel: 2001: Ett Rymdäventyr

"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a countdown to tomorrow, a road map to human destiny, a quest for the infinite. It is a dazzling, Academy Award-winning visual achievement, a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. It may be the masterwork of director Stanley Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke) and it will likely excite, inspire and enthrall for generations.
To begin his voyage into the future, Kubrick visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever conceived) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted realms of space, perhaps even into immortality.

300 Spartans, The
(1962 Rudolph Maté) 50:-

svensk titel: De Tappra 300

Based on actual events occurring in Greece in 480 B.C., this scintillating drama stars Richard Egan as the Greek soldier Leonidas, who leads three hundred Spartan soldiers against an overwhelming Persian army in the Battle of Thermopylae.

Unable to recruit the soldiers he needs to defend a critical Greek mountain pass against Persia's King Xerxes, Leonidas nonetheless prepares for battle. When warned that the number of arrows his tiny army faces will "blot out the sun", Leonidas replies that his army will "fight in the shade". With its superb cinematography, realism and musical score, this story of courage and self-sacrifice is inspired filmmaking at its best.

39 Steps, The
(1935 Alfred Hitchcock)

svensk titel: De 39 Stegen

An innocent man on the run. A beautiful icy blonde. A fast-moving cross-country pursuit. A chaotic world where no one is ever what they seem. 'The 39 Steps' set the template for Hitchcock's classic suspense thrillers.
John Buchan's very loosely adapted story begins when Richard Hannay picks up the exotic 'Annabella Smith' at a music hall. The next morning he discovers she's been killed and finds himself in the frame for her murder. Way ahead of its time in terms of its pace, black comedy and the sexual chemistry between the charismatic leads (particularly when Carroll removes her stockings while handcuffed to Donat), 'The 39 Steps' is among Hitch's finest and has been voted into the BFI's Top Five Favorite British Films.

Thirteen Days
(2000 Roger Donaldson)

For thirteen extroardinary days in October 1962, the world stood on the brink of an unthinkable catastrophe.
Across the globe, people anxiously awaited the outcome of a harrowing political, diplomatic and military confrontation that had threatened to end in apocalyptic nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. In "Thirteen Days", the power and the peril of the American presidency is dramatically explored capturing the urgency, suspense and paralysing chaos of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The alarming escalation of events during those fateful days brought to the fore such public figures as Robert McNamara, Adlai Stevenson, Theodore Sorenson, Andrei Gromyko, Anatoly Dobrynin, McGeorge Bundy, Dean Acheson, Dean Rusk, and General Curtis LeMay. In addition, many others - politicians, diplomats and soldiers were on the front line of the showdown. In "Thirteen Days", we see all of these people, and, above all, President John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby, through the eyes of a trusted presidential aide and confidante, Kenneth P. O'Donnell (Kevin Costner).

Tjuren från Bronx
(1980 Martin Scorsese) 30:-

originaltitel: Raging Bull

Raging Bull is arguably the finest work from the Scorsese and De Niro partnership. De Niro gives and amazing portrayal of a man whose animal side lurks just beneath the surface, ever ready to erupt.
Vivid and unremitting in its uncompromising brutality and honesty, the fight sequences are famed for their realism. Violent throughout, this film is a testament to Scorsese's and De Niro's skills, creating a thoroughly absorbing film about such an unlikable character. Renowned for throwing himself into the roles of his character, De Niro went on a diet to gain fifty pounds during production for the role of the faded star.
