Burning Spear - Farover
(Radic RDC-2004 UK-82 VG+ 375:-)

There were some hope that Burning Spear would be able to take up the cause of reggae internationally after the death of Bob Marley. Certainly, Winston Rodney shared Marley's concerns - particularly the pan-Africanism - but ultimately he lacked Marley's intensity and fervor, but if you're a fan of Burning Spear's 70s output and you happen to be wondering: yes, you need this one, too!
Burning Spear - Social Living
(1 Stop STOP-1001 UK-78 VG+ 375:-)

Classic 1978 Roots rock reggae from Winston Rodney on fire with tunes "Civilized Reggae" "Marcus Children Suffer" "Institution" and many more!
Cliff, Jimmy - The Harder they Come
(Island ILPS-9202 UK-72 VG+ 375:-)

This record is not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" was to 70s soul! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene.

Original UK pressing.
Marley, Bob - Exodus
(Tuff Gong B0026682-01 EU-17 EX 1000:-)

Maybe the best place to start if you're looking to dive into the short but incredible legacy of music left behind by Bob Marley – as the album marked a real global turning point for the singer, and includes a number of tracks that are still his standout classics after all these years! The set was recorded in London, but with a nicely understated sound – just the right focus on all the best elements of the Wailers sound – in a way that creates a magical flow throughout.

The super deluxe edition includes the original album, "The Movement Continues", the live set and a fourth 12-inch vinyl, "Punky Reggae Party", which includes a previously unreleased extended mix of "Keep On Moving". This set also comes with a pair of seven-inch singles – "Waiting in Vain" b/w "Roots" and "Smile Jamaica (Part One)" b/w "Smile Jamaica (Part Two)". Also included is 12 × 12-inch booklet.
Pioneers - Feel the Rhythm
(Mercury 9286.172 UK-76 VG+ 375:-)

Formed in the mid 60’s in Kingston, Jamaica, the Pioneers were one of the first groups to have international hits in the new music genre called Reggae which followed Ska and Rock Steady.

This 1976 album was written and produced by Eddie Grant, who also provided guitar services. Comes in a fully laminated picture sleeve featuring a nice young lady inviting you to "Feel The Rhythm"!
Selecter - Too Much Pressure
(Chrysalis CHR-1274 US-80 VG+ 350:-)

One of the greatest groups of the legendary 2-Tone records scene at the start of the 80s - and a group that's maybe got an even harder edge than their more familiar labelmates, The Specials!

The groove here is revival ska, but with a lean, jagged quality that's very different than so many of the softer groups that sprang up in later years - definitely tied more to the sound of the late 70s punk years, overall - thanks in part to the urgency of the lead vocals of Pauline Black, who really seems to dominate the lyrics over the group's other singer, Arthur Hendrickson. Instrumentation is nice and spare - which keeps the sound sharp!
